You might hear about “Wh” questions at a parent-teacher conference. You might hear that your child is having trouble answering ‘wh’ questions. Kindergarten teachers listen very closely to how your child answers questions that begin with Who, What, Why, Where and When. These thinking questions that cannot be answered with a simple ‘no’, ‘yes’ or ‘I don’t know’ are hard for 5 and 6 year olds and take some effort to answer. Many Kindergarten children are not able to answer these questions appropriately and if it isn’t noticed by the adult listener, the child will continue to answer incorrectly. Please listen closely when you ask your child a question and if he/she answers it wrong, take the time to explain how he/she should have answered. You will be teaching your child a valuable lesson in communicating appropriately.
